Roman English
Naulo chhada nau pulaa ko gaas, purano bhaye pachhi jagalta ko naas.
Literal English Translation
When new, a morsel (as precious as one made) from nine bundles (of rice/grain); after becoming old, destruction by the scruff of the neck/hair.
English Meaning
This proverb signifies that new things or people are often highly valued, cherished, and given special attention. However, once they become old, worn out, or perceived as less useful, they are often neglected, mistreated, or discarded.
English Proverb
Familiarity breeds contempt. (This is a close conceptual match, though the Nepali proverb has a stronger implication of initial overvaluation and subsequent harsh discard). Another could be 'A new broom sweeps clean' (for the initial enthusiasm) combined with the idea of being discarded once usefulness wanes.
