Roman English
Daju lai sakdina, bhauju lai raakhdina !
Literal English Translation
Cannot defeat the elder brother, will not keep/tolerate the sister-in-law (elder brother's wife).
English Meaning
This proverb describes a situation where someone, unable to confront or harm a stronger or more powerful person (the 'elder brother'), instead targets or takes out their frustration on someone weaker who is associated with that powerful person (the 'sister-in-law'). It signifies misplaced aggression or bullying the vulnerable associate of one's adversary.
English Proverb
He who cannot beat the horse beats the saddle. (This is a less common proverb but captures the essence of targeting something associated with the real target.) Another related concept, though not a direct proverb equivalent, is 'kicking the cat' (displaced aggression).
